Ignatius and Binx a comparison of two New Orleanders

Ignatius and Binx are two very different characters.  Both characters are attempting to make their way through life as it throws obstacles in their way.  However, Ignatius is lazy, fat, and has lived off of his mother for 30 years, whereas Binx is a hard working stock broker.  Relationship-wise Ignatius seems stuck on one former relationship while Binx seems incapable of finding a lasting relationship.  Ignatius seems to blindly stumble from point in life where Binx searches with a sense of fortitude.  After spending over a week in the city of New Orleans I find that the city embodies parts of both characters.  The character of Binx is embodies the city's strength and willingness to work.  Ignatius seems to be the embodiment of the citizen's love for their city.  Ignatius has only ever left the city of New Orleans once and he hated it.  He enjoys spending his time in the French Quarter and his meetings with the different characters in the story show the many kinds of people, good and bad, who live in New Orleans.  I find it difficult to pick any one of the two characters to represent the city, because there is such a difference of people here.  At some points it seems like a big city, especially around the central business district, but at other points it can seem like a small town, or a collection of small towns.

  1. Roddey,
Your reflection that New Orleans... " at some points...seems like a big city, especially around the central business district, but at other points it can seem like a small town, or a collection of small towns" is an important insight. What distinguishes one neighborhood (or small town) from another? Good thing to think about.

I've read a few post that hint at this, but yours comes out and says it: Binx--a hard worker? What textual evidence can we find to support this?

If we consider energy expenditure, Ignatius (with his elaborate lies, dodging, and engineering of disruptions all over the city) is actually LESS lazy than Binx, who seems to show up to work only to entertain himself by sneaking longing glances at his secretaries.

Let's not let Binx vs. Ignatius get away from us!
