My goals from working with all of these groups is to learn as much as possible. I want to come out of it knowing how they feel about the rebuilding process, what they really need help with, and what we can do to help when we are not directly in New Orleans. It would be great to come out of this trip and have the ability to tell others what the people of Nola are really feeling about the situation and rebuilding process. I want to make an impact.

What is needed
In all honesty, I have (or had now) no idea what to expect when it comes to the service projects we will be unertaking, everything is a little vague. It is probablly best that I do not expect anything, because New Orleans is nothing like I expected. I am thrilled at the prospect of helping people in all of these various ways and being able to ineract with the different people of Nola. These I think are reasonable to expect: hard labor, sweat, shock, long days, and the heat. The wetlands and gardening projects will be pretty straight forward and probablly will not be the most intense part of rebuilding New Orleans. I am expecting to come back from those dirty and tired. St. Margaret's, I am assuming, is the nursing home and so that day will be interesting learning from those who have lived in Nola for a long time. It will be fascinating to learn about how it used to be and their thoughts on Katrina and the rebuilding process. Rebuilding Together is the type of project that I thought we would be doing here, rebuilding houses. I am excited about going out and seeing areas that were really affected by Katrina because we have yet to see an area that was really devestated or has not been rebuilt yet. The experience should be life changing, or at the very least extremely emotional.

Hi Meg,
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday we will take an impromptu tour of the lower 9th with Dr. Pani Kolb, an expert on New Orleans' waterways and herself a published author on the intricacies of the Katrina disaster.
Sometimes making an impact is as much about changing yourself as it is about changing the world around you. Just throwing that out there as a little "food for thought"!
