Yesterday, we spent a full day in the French Quarter, getting to know the touristy side of New Orleans. I really enjoyed being in the Quarter and trying to navigate around an area that I don’t know nearly as much about as I had thought. Although I’m sure that my bulky backpack, glaring white tennis shoes, and map glued to my nose quickly labeled me as a tourist, I had a blast walking along streets and learning about the history of the city. It was a great day, but I was exhausted by dinner and eager to begin our community service projects.
Although exhausted, I was surprisingly eager today to pull on a wader and crawl on my knees through the mud as we planted aquatic plants in the lagoon at City Park. This experience was completely different than anything I had ever done, but oddly enough still seemed to fit within the realm of my ‘comfort zone’. I was excited to finally begin working towards accomplishing one of our main purposes for coming to New Orleans. Even though we all we’re covered with mud by the end, I had a blast.
I think this same excitement I had today will keep me energized and for our future projects to come. I will be propelled by the anticipation of not exactly knowing what we’re getting into, but that we’re going to have a blast doing it. I don’t know what St. Margaret’s Daughters or Rebuilding New Orleans Together has in store for us, or whether we’ll be covered in mud again soon, but I do know that we’re going to have fun with whatever we’re doing. Thus, I don’t really have any concerns towards or limitations about future projects we’ll be taking on. Regardless of how naive that may sound, I am exhilarated when thinking about future adventures that we’ll be embarking on!
